Ireland renowned for its beauty, Guinness and craic, but surf?

With 3172 kilometers of exposed coastline, Ireland is a surfer’s paradise. And, there are few better places to head out than on the Dingle peninsula. With three coastlines all within 30 mins of each other, Dingle has something for everyone whether you’re a beginner or an expert.

Ex-professional windsurfer and ISA Senior Windsurfing Instructor Jamie Knox, has been teaching surfing and windsurfing in Dingle for well over 20 years. His watersports school is recognised by the Irish Surfing Association and the Irish Sailing Association, and his highly qualified, experienced and knowledgeable team offer surfing, windsurfing and Stand Up Paddle Boarding lessons.

Life@StayYNA spoke with Jeremy Owen, Manager at Jamie Knox.

Jamie Knox Watersports has been around here for some time?
"We've been offering watersport tuition for well over 25 years, Jamie fell in love with the area, and it’s wind and waves in the late 80’s and never looked back."

What makes Dingle so good for watersports - particularly at this time of year?
"Autumn wind and waves can be awesome and the water is still pretty warm"

Wheres your favourite place to surf/windsurf in Dingle?
"Brandon Bay on the north side of the peninsula has lots of great spots that work in different swell and wind directions."

Are the waters of Dingle safe for children to do watersports in at this time of the year?
"You always need to be careful around the sea as it can change very quickly, we’d suggest seeking a sheltered beach with no waves if you want to swim. if in doubt ask a local or pop into our surf shop on the maharees and ask."

What do you and Jamie enjoy about teaching?
"Just seeing people achieve something new and the smiles, they always seems to end up smiling in the end"

What do you like to do afterwards? Do you go for a beer or something to eat?
"The Green Room (just past the surf shop) is a great place for an apres windsurf/surf drink, Spillanes on the Maharees is a great spot for a bite to eat and Dingle has loads of great bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets."
