Ring in the Revelry

If you’re looking for a quiet night out, you’d better go home early on New Year’s Eve in Dingle town! One of the most popular destinations in Ireland to ring in the New Year, the town is thronged.

New Year’s Eve in Dingle is a wild night, says Dingle-dweller Deanna O’Connor.

The evening starts off low key enough, and some of the pubs around town will have some music in the early part of the evening, generally around 7-9pm. Funnily enough, in a town where there’s a trad musician playing in every pub all summer, it’s the one night of the year you might find a bit less live music than usual. As the publican from Tigh Ui Chathain (Kanes) in Ballyferriter puts it, “There’ll be enough excitement without trying to fit anything else in…there’ll be plenty of noise anyway.” Even in the quiet and cosy spots, like Kanes and Tigh Bric in the remote parts ‘back West’, it’s still likely to be a lively night.

In Geaneys, on Main Street, Dingle, where there will be music on every night that week, they still plan to have some around 7 or 8pm in the evening, and a DJ later - “ballads and Irish songs to liven people up,” says Mr Geaney Snr. Neligans will be operating on a similar format, with one or two musicians in the early evening and a DJ later.

At 10pm you can expect the pubs to empty as everyone heads for the Marina and a spectacular fireworks display. Then at 11.30pm the renowned Dingle Fife & Drum Band will march through the crowded streets, up Green Street and down Main Street to the bridge beside An Droichead Beag (aka the local late bar) where a clock is projected on the side of the building to countdown to the New Year. Times Square has nothing on this atmosphere, but it’s full-on and definitely a night for flat shoes!

New Year’s Day has a more chilled out atmosphere, and this is when locals who don’t want to brave the New Year’s Eve crush will emerge, dressed up for a night out. For families who maybe took the children home after the fireworks, and rang in the New Year in the comfort of your StayYNA house, this is the night to book the babysitter and enjoy the atmosphere without having to elbow your way to the bar!

THE CURE

Why not blow off the cobwebs next day with a bracing walk and a New Year’s Day dip? Head out along the coast by the Skellig Hotel towards the tower, Hussy’s Folly, which was built in the 1840s during the Famine and used for a short time as a customs watchtower. Just past the folly you will come to a little rocky cove called Slaidin, which still has structures built as ladies changing rooms in the 1920s. It’s the best place to spot Fungie from as well—if the prospect of swimming with Dingle’s celebrity dolphin won’t get you into the icy water, nothing will!
