A tradition as old as time itself. It’s thought the Biddy’s heritage is both Early Christianity and Ancient Celtic Tradition. It’s celebrated on Imbolc –  a Gaelic festival marking the beginning of spring. The Biddy is honoured each year when the Biddy groups visit a number of rural houses and pubs in the area, carrying a Brídeóg which is meant to keep all evil spirits away from humans and animals. Traditionally, if you receive a visit from one you are guaranteed good luck, fertility and prosperity.

There’s lots to do at this festival, including hat and Brídeog making workshops, secret cinemas, traditional music sessions, drama productions and more.
