The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland’s most famous driving routes, it’s 180 km long and full of ‘wow’ moments.
Glenbeigh – If you start from the lovely village of Glenbeigh, there are some great highlights to take in. Rossbeigh beach is a 4.5km fabulous beach jutting out into Dingle Bay. The beach is also a great place for a long walk to help clear the mind.
Kells Bay – Continue through Kells Bay. An old picturesque fishing village with a small beach and a great pier. Kells Bay Gardens is also worth a visit. See the fabulous fern trees that grow in an amazing microclimate. You can also walk the longest rope bridge in Ireland here. After a visit in the gardens, stop by the cafe which serves great Thai food and sit outside to see views of Dingle Bay.
Cahersiveen – Stop in Cahersiveen, a fine country town with good cafes and restaurants. If you have time make a diversion to visit the Stone forts of Cahergal & Leacanabuaile.
Valentia Island – Head to Valentia Island where you can take the ferry from Reen Point, a couple of miles outside Cahersiveen. Knightstown is a charming village with lovely naval buildings. Continue to follow the Skellig Ring route along the North side of the Island. Here, you can see views of the Atlantic crashing onto the coast and the Blasket Islands in the distance.
Portmagee – Next drive to Portmagee – a little fishing village with bright colour shop fronts, stop for a bite and a pint and sit overlooking the harbour. There are boat trips from here to the Skellig Islands.
St Finians Bay – Continue to St Finian’s Bay which has a small beach with big waves crashing in. You can swim here but be aware there are strong currents so don’t go out of your depth. You’ll also be looking directly out at the Skellig Islands as they jut dramatically out of the sea.
Kenmare – Proceed to Kenmare – a buzzy town full of lovely shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants making it a prime stop for some lunch and a pint. The town is situated at the mouth of the beautiful Kenmare bay, you’ll have views of the Beara Peninsula on one side and the Iveragh Peninsula on the other.
Killarney – Finally head to Killarney – Ireland’s adventure capital, famous for its history, heritage, activities and hospitality. There’s an abundance of places to visit and see here such as Killarney National Park, the 19th Century Muckross house and the 15th century Ross Castle. In addition to the stunning panoramic views and outdoor activities to do here, Killarney is a sweet town full of cosy pubs playing traditional music and great restaurants. It’s the perfect place to end your drive!
