Wild Atlantic Walks
Inspired by the legacy of famous Antarctic explorer Tom Crean, who returned home to Annascaul in 1921 and opened The South Pole Inn, there are many walking trails and tracks in the surrounding hills that are popular with lovers of nature and the outdoors. Annascaul village is a stop-over stage on The Kerry Camino, a spectacular 57km walking route along the Wild Atlantic Way, stretching from Dingle to Tralee.

Other must do’s during your stay at The Writer’s Cottage is a visit to the mystical Annascaul Lake, an ice-age remnant surrounded by stunning cliffs and mountains; Minard Castle, a 16th century fortress overlooking a secluded sea-cove that’s perfect for a bracing early morning dip, and the Annascaul River Walk (access is to the rere of the South Pole Inn) for a peaceful evening stroll, accompanied by the music of water tumbling over rocks and maybe the sight of a kingfisher, followed by a drink at any of the five village pubs on the way home!
Useful Information for Guests
There is a children’s playground two minutes walk from the cottage, enroute to the village.
Ó Domhnaill’s Store in the village has a good range of essential groceries and also keeps a stock of fuel if required. Open 8am-9pm Monday to Saturday, and 8am-2pm on Sunday.
Traditional music in Hanafin’s Bar most Tuesday evening 6-8 pm. Hanafin’s Bar is also a great spot to get up-to-date information on local walks and hiking trails.
Check out the occasional live music sessions in Dan Foley’s Pub and Patcheen’s Pub.

Bedrooms
The cottage offers two comfortable bedrooms, providing flexible sleeping arrangements for families, couples or friends. Bedroom 1 features a double bed, Blue bedside tables and matching blue lamps add a stylish touch, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere. Bedroom 2 includes two single beds and benefits from a window overlooking the conservatory. The cottage comfortably sleeps four guests, with the option of accommodating a fifth guest (child only) using the day bed, making it an ideal choice for a relaxing family stay or a getaway with friends.

To the rear, the enclosed garden provides a private outdoor retreat where guests can unwind and enjoy the tranquillity of the surrounding landscape. Accessed from the conservatory via five steps with a handrail, it is an ideal spot to relax in the fresh Kerry air after a day of exploring. Beyond the rear fence lies a meadow that gently slopes down to the Owenascaul River, creating a peaceful rural outlook. The river flows through the heart of Annascaul before continuing towards the sea at Inch and is well known locally for its salmon and sea trout fishing. It is also home to the scenic Annascaul River Walk, a picturesque trail that follows the riverbank through woodland before looping back to the village. While the garden itself does not extend to the river, guests can still enjoy the peaceful setting, surrounding countryside and the soothing sounds of the river carried across the meadow. The conservatory provides a wonderful space to enjoy the scenery whatever the weather, allowing guests to stay warm and comfortable while appreciating the changing views, local wildlife and tranquil atmosphere of the garden beyond.

Annascaul village is the perfect holiday base to explore all the magic that the Dingle Peninsula has to offer. It’s just a 15km drive to the bustling town of Dingle itself and a mere 7km to the magnificent sands and surf at Inch Beach. The Peninsula is renowned for its abundance of sandy beaches, ideal for families with small children and all within easy driving distance of Annascaul.
There is an excellent public bus service that links Annascaul with Dingle, Killarney (49km) and Tralee (32km). The village has numerous friendly pubs, restaurants and cafés and a well-stocked grocery store - try out the locally made dry-cured rashers and the award-winning Annascaul black pudding during your stay!
