Historic Sights to See in Dingle | Dingle Cottage Rentals

Dingle is known for a number of things including the food festival, the great seafood restaurants, the views across the ocean and the quality Dingle cottage rentals on offer from Stay YNA that offer you the most wonderful, warm and comfortable surroundings in which to base your stay while you explore the amazing local historic sights. Dingle is so steeped in interesting history that you will be sure to fall in love with the place and want to come back and visit again.

Here are some of our favourite ‘must-see’ historic spots to visit while you are here:

Reask Monastic Site

The Reask Monastic Site is located two kilometres outside Ballyferriter and is an early Christian site that was excavated in the 1970s. It is most famous for its carved cross slab that includes Celtic, Classical and Christian imagery. The site contains an oratory, burial ground and signs of the people living there including dry-stone huts and a corn drying kiln.

Kilmalkedar Church

Kilmalkedar Church is in Ballyferriter and is an early and medieval site that was associated with St Brendan but was originally founded by St Maolcethair, a local saint. There’s a 12th-century church that was styled on the Cormac’s Chapel in Cashel and is one of only a few stone roofed churches in Ireland. With its Romanesque doorway and stunning green keystone, it is still an impressive place to visit.

Minard Castle

Minard Castle overlooks Dingle Bay and is one of the most picturesque castle locations in Ireland. It also contains an Iron Age ring fort and St John’s Holy Well, dating from early Christian times. It is best known for its part in the Anglo-Irish conflict in the 1650s as well as for featuring in the Oscar-winning film Ryan’s Daughter in 1970.

Today there is a rectangular tower house which was once four stories high along with various ruins, although some are too dangerous for people to explore – there is a virtual reality tour available instead. There is also the remains of the Church of St Mary which was destroyed at the same time as the castle.
