Life In…Ibiza

Pip and Fred Kirkby moved out to Ibiza to start STAY YNA last November. Having gone through the winter they are enjoying the island waking up to warm weather, celebrations and the opening of beach restaurants, an integral part of life in Ibiza! Written by Pip Kirkby.

Warming Up!

2017 has enjoyed a late Easter, and the island is waking up early for the summer.  It's definitely worth considering an Easter break as the beaches are lovely and not so busy, even if the sea is a bit bracing!  The Easter celebrations are very special,  Semana Santa (Holy Week) really does go on for a week, and the uninitiated can be caught by surprise by the businesses closing for the Easter break from Maundy Thursday.  The processions of “penitents” which take place in both Ibiza town and Santa Eulalia are worth seeing on one of the nights that they move through town.  

Food Food Food! 

Eating out in Ibiza is a real pleasure and now the weather is warmer the restaurants are coming alive again. Tucked away down a long Camino is the little beach of S'Estanyol and the amazing Cala Bonita restaurant. It's 5 minutes from Jesus but it feels as though you're in the middle of nowhere.  It's not cheap but the cooking is amazing and the fish is practically flapping as it lands on your plate. 

Beautifully decorated, and overseen by Ana it is the perfect place for a lazy weekend lunch. We shared squid, the creamiest burrata and tuna tartare to start, and went on to have sea bass and denton on delicious roast vegetables with house potatoes. Puds were yummy: an amazing selection of homemade ice creams and sorbets, a deconstructed cheesecake and a lemon mousse/curd. And as a really nice touch homemade ice lollies for the children as they played on the beach…

Bar Flotante is practically in the sea (it is well named!) on Talamanca Beach it offers no messing good food. With a menu that has probably not been updated since the 80s you're on safe ground with anything you order. A proper old school chicken salad was super fresh (and the way to eat it btw is to cut everything up and mix it with the pink dressing), and lenguado (sole) and chips was great. It is super reasonable and popular with locals. You can now (sometimes) book a table, just ask for one enfrente de la mar.

We'd been waiting eagerly for Sa Carboneria to reopen after its winter break, and it was worth the wait!  The best steak we've had on the island and the most delicious sweetbreads too.  It was a chilly March evening so we ate inside but there is a great little garden which beckons for summer nights. It is tucked away down one of the streets of Santa Eulalia and definitely worth a visit!
